Close an account

How to close a deceased person's Namecheap account

Namecheap handles closing a deceased person's account through by email, or an online form. The steps below are Namecheap's own published process, taken from its official support pages — this page organizes them so you can see what the provider asks for; it doesn't add to them or recommend any particular action.

What you'll need

The provider will tell you which documents it needs when you contact it.

Steps

  1. Contact Namecheap Support (24/7 live chat or a ticket, or email domainsupport@namecheap.com) and explain that the account owner has died and that you are the executor.
  2. Have the account username, Support PIN if known, and the domain names to hand; Support will tell you what documentation it needs.
  3. An account cannot be closed while it holds active services: domains can be pushed to another Namecheap account or removed by Support, SSL/Private Email subscriptions can be cancelled or pushed, and hosting can be switched or cancelled.
  4. Once services are moved, Support closes the account; a closed account cannot be re-established and its username cannot be reused.

Closing one account is only part of the job — every recurring charge still draws on a card or bank account the estate will eventually claim. HeirLoft reads the recurring charges straight out of an inbox in one pass, so you can see everything that's still billing while you work down the list.

Notes

Namecheap has no dedicated deceased-owner knowledgebase article; the process runs through Support using the account-closure procedure. The live-chat page sits behind bot protection.
