How to close a deceased person's Coinbase account
Coinbase handles closing a deceased person's account through an online form. The steps below are Coinbase's own published process, taken from its official support pages — this page organizes them so you can see what the provider asks for; it doesn't add to them or recommend any particular action.
What you'll need
- Certified copy of the death certificate
- Letters testamentary or letters of administration (or a small-estate affidavit where eligible)
- Your government-issued photo ID
- A letter of instruction stating how remaining funds should be handled
Steps
- Sign in to your own Coinbase account (create one if you do not have one) and open the Executor Services form from the deceased-account help article.
- Provide probate documents: Probate, Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Affidavit for Collection, or a Small Estate Affidavit, plus the death certificate.
- Provide a current, valid government-issued photo ID for each person named in the probate documents.
- Provide a letter signed by the person(s) named in the probate documents directing Coinbase to transfer the assets to a specified Coinbase account.
- Fill in the required fields, select "Generate verification code" and submit; a Coinbase analyst works the case with you and transfers the assets once the documents are verified.
Closing one account is only part of the job — every recurring charge still draws on a card or bank account the estate will eventually claim. HeirLoft reads the recurring charges straight out of an inbox in one pass, so you can see everything that's still billing while you work down the list.

Notes
Coinbase does not support naming a beneficiary on individual accounts — estate documents or state intestacy law decide who receives the assets. Requirements vary by region.
