How to close a deceased person's Capital One account
Capital One handles closing a deceased person's account through by phone. The steps below are Capital One's own published process, taken from its official support pages — this page organizes them so you can see what the provider asks for; it doesn't add to them or recommend any particular action.
What you'll need
- Certified copy of the death certificate
Steps
- Identify which Capital One account types the deceased held (credit card, bank, auto finance) from statements or agreements — the process and requirements differ by account type, and the same information may need to be provided more than once.
- Follow the Estates Servicing path for each product from the Capital One estates hub (Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, Auto Finance), or call the number on the back of the card.
- If a Discover account (other than a Discover by Capital One card) also needs settling, contact Discover's Beneficiary Care Team: 1-800-975-0162 for checking & savings, 1-800-618-1621 for personal loans, 1-800-347-5519 for cards and all other accounts.
Closing one account is only part of the job — every recurring charge still draws on a card or bank account the estate will eventually claim. HeirLoft reads the recurring charges straight out of an inbox in one pass, so you can see everything that's still billing while you work down the list.

Capital One's public estates hub routes by product and does not publish a single estates phone number or mailing address; the per-product pages sit behind JavaScript.
